Mendoza is the capital of the
province of Mendoza. Usually, it is a stop for
climbers heading up Aconcagua, which is the highest
mountain in the Western Hemisphere, or for other
activities such as mountaineering, hiking, horseback
riding, rafting, and others. In winter, ski fans
go to the city for its easy access to the Andes.
One of the main industries of the Mendoza area
is wine making.
Every year, marked by the grape harvest, the Vendimia
festival takes place in early March. Seventeen
beauty queens (one for each provincial departament)
are nominated, and the winner is selected by a
panel of about 50 judges.
There are several museums, the main ones being
the Museo Cornelio Moyano (a natural history museum)
and the Museo del Área Fundacional (Foundation
Area Museum, historical). In Maipú, southeast
from Mendoza, there is the Museo Nacional del
Vino (National Wine Museum) that points mainly
at the history of winemaking in the area.
Las Leñas
Las Leñas is a ski resort, situated in
the western part of the Mendoza. It is renowned
known for its powder snow, nice weather, Nordic
ski and outstanding opportunities for extreme
skiing. The ski area offers a good diversity of
slopes ranging from very easy pistes for beginners
to extreme ones for advanced skiers, which includes
a range of off-piste areas apt for extreme skiing.
There are 27 runs and a maximum non-stop skiable
distance of 7 km (not including off piste alternatives).
It is the highest resort of South America.
The skiing season goes from the end of June to
mid October. In case the weather conditions do
not contribute and there is not enough snow, Las
Leñas has a modern system to make artificial
snow.
This ski center is open during Argentine summer
and offers activities that include mountain biking,
horse riding, climbing and others.
The accommodation available is varied, ranging
from first-class hotels, apartment-hotels to sleep-houses.
You can find there a small shopping center that
includes a bank, ski-related shops, souvenir shops,
and a supermarket. The commercial offer is completed
by coffee houses, restaurants, and night clubs.
