Tango Round

Buenos Aires: World Capital of Tango.
Tango is one of the ways of getting to know Buenos Aires. From its beginnings, tango gave its rhythm to the city. To understand the feeling and passion by tango, we may look for its origin and see that tango accompanied all class of people, from brothels to good homes, and expressed in its subject matter the big themes of man: love, death, courage, unhappiness, and misfortune. In other times tango was a way of living and its “lunfardo” (local slang of Buenos Aires) gave us maxims and proverbs that are lively until today.

Today, Tango provides an important activity in the city, comprising places where to dance, schools where to learn, shows, restaurants with show, theme hotels, tango shops, books and magazines, etc. The “milongas” are where tango is actually danced, under the shape of clubs, cafeterias or dancing balls. In the places where the “milonga” takes place, there are old “milongueros” (expert dancers), beginner dancers, foreigners and local people, men and women, shadows and lights. There is an atmosphere that gives sense to all, an atmosphere of meeting, of miracle and, if the orchestra is playing live, the atmosphere turns magical.

Los caminos de Gardel in the Abasto area (Road of Carlos Gardel)
From the Abasto, the best singer of the world keeps calling us. Tenement houses, taverns, buffets, committees, brothels, casual laborers and stallholders were witnesses and bring closer Gardel’s lyrics. The visits to the traditional places in the Abasto that make a reference to Gardel’s identity help us understand the reason why, after more than 70 years of his death, his presence is more significant than ever and also talks to us about the identity of the “Porteños” (the people of Buenos Aires).
There is a museum with his name: Museum House Carlos Gardel.

Carlos Gardel
He expressed his art singing and chose to do this with a genre that was just starting: the tango song, but it had other influences, roots in the folklore. It came from the Abasto neighborhood and for the Porteños the neighborhood is our closest native land, something that identifies us forever, that makes us live in a certain way, a pride that is defended and never betrayed. This area, in full growth, marked its destiny in those meeting places such as small restaurants, small cafes, brothels, committees and theaters. That world that emerged around the Abasto market is the key to walk over the indelible marks this singer left, to understand why Carlos Gardel is the artistic and social exponent in a neighborhood with the most important and popular tango stamp.

Buenos Aires Tango Festival
Every year the Buenos Aires tango Festival and the Tango Dance World Championship take place.
End of February/beginning of March: there the most important performers of tango gather. More than 70 concerts in different scenarios of the city: in big theaters, notable bars and also great events indoors or in the open air.
With the presence of the public, tango classes are carried out for professional and amateur dancers. The classes and milongas for beginners are free, and the classes for advanced dancers have a minimum cost per person.

Tango Dance World Championship
In the month of August, the entire city transforms for nine days and nine nights.
It’s about the international competition of professional dancing partners from all over the world.
The contest is divided into two categories: Tango Salón (danced in the dance floor) and Tango de Escenario (danced in the stage). At the same time, all the amateur dancers are called to take part for free in milongas, concerts, tango classes, workshops and exhibitions.

Open Studios
The plastic art scene in Buenos Aires has distinguished exponents. Important artists, who, from their studios, are waiting for us to show and tell us about their trade. Spread through the entire city, you may find some marked areas where the studios are situated.
