Carnival
This ancient popular demonstration was introduced in America by the Spanish conquest and fused with other ways of celebrating earth’s fertility in our regions. In the Puna and the Quebrada of Humahuaca regions the carnival is symbolized by a devil that unearths noisily from a stone cairn or a magical place, dancing in time to the music of the native instruments, behind the group, through the streets of the town. Streamer and flour are thrown and are part of this ritual with hullabaloo and humor and last many days.
After this celebration, the sad goodbye of the Carnival begins and is presented by the moment when the devil is buried. The main characteristic of this celebration is the participation of the town people, that’s why it is highly recommended to be in high spirits for this kind of events. Besides, you can taste delicious “empanadas” (kind of meat pies), corn, goat cheese, lamb barbecue, etc.

La Pachamama Celebration
This is the most popular mythological belief of the Incas that still survives in some regions of Jujuy province. The Christian evangelization couldn’t eradicate the presence of the Pachamama (Mother Land) of the spiritual life of the aboriginal communities.
In Jujuy, the mountain people that profess the catholic faith still worships the Pachamama, just like their ancestors did centuries ago. There are many celebrations that honor the Pachamama when the sowing and harvest time begins. But the main tribute is in August, especially the first day of the month. The celebration starts very early in the morning, with the lightening of incense in each house. Around midday, guests start to arrive at each house, among them neighbors and friends. After the greetings and welcomes, they share lunch. After lunch, the celebration proper starts: they go to the center of the courtyard, where they dig a hole and they feed Mother Land and give her something to drink, putting in the hole coca leaves, alcohol, corn liquor and cigarettes. Then they cover up the hole, burying, in some cases, alcohol bottles and wine. To complete the ceremony, the people present hold hands to express the prevailing spirit of fraternity and, in a circle, they dance around the covered hole to the sound of the Indian flutes and ballads.
